Venice Beach is Filthy With Storm Debris

Dateline: Saturday, June 3, 2017... while the Rainbow themed lifeguard tower at Brooks Ave. is getting a great deal of attention from the media and with charitable organizations having photo ops at this same lifeguard tower, there remains an incredible amount of storm debris that litters the beach along the high tide line that the Los Angeles County Dept of Beaches & Harbors (LACDBH) has yet to clean up, in spite of the fact that it represents a significant public health and safety risk.

This is yet another example of the failure of LACDBH to have its staff walk the water's edge and pick up and remove storm debris.  LACDBH is well aware that all this storm debris, principally, broken shafts of bamboo, litter the water's edge.  No one wants to do the physical labor, however, of cleaning it up. That is the problem.  In spite of the fact that LACDBH has staff that is capable of doing this work, they do not do so.  In my opinion, it is because the department is lazy.  Why else do they not clean this up?

It is not just unsightly, it is dangerous to the beach going public, esp. children.  The bamboo is sharp and can puncture skin, causing cuts and lacerations which can get infected and lead to staph infections.  Is the Board of Supervisors listening now?!  I hope so.  Both a Supervisor and a City Councilman came down to visit the rainbow themed lifeguard tower.  I would like to think that they care as much for the safety of the public that visits and recreates at the beach.

Here are the photos of the storm debris adjacent to the Brooks Ave. rainbow themed tower that I took yesterday morning, Saturday, June 3, 2017 around 9 a.m.

And it is like this all the way from Navy St. down to the Venice Pier!...

How long will it take LACDBH to clean this up, if at all?

Respectfully submitted,

William Maguire,
Los Angeles County and City resident
